McDermott calls for Labour initiative on land purchases to be considered



A Leitrim Councillor is calling for consideration to be given to a Labour initiative aimed at tackling the housing crisis that is currently impacting local authorities right across the country.

The Labour Party’s proposing new legislation which it says could knock tens of thousands of euro off house prices.

The Land Bill is based on a recommendation from the 1973 Kenny Report, which suggested capping the price of land to make housing more affordable.

Local authorities would be able to compulsory purchase land at agricultural values, plus 25%, under the proposal.
