Harkin raises the issue of Sligo Garda Station in Dáil

A local TD says the ‘the time for talking is over’  in relation to a new Garda station in Sligo.

Independent Sligo/Leitrim Deputy, Marian Harkin raised the issue, and the lack of an armed response unit in Sligo, with the Taoiseach in the Dáil recently saying the current situation is ‘unacceptable.’

Michael Martin said he would bring up the problems highlighted with the minister for Justice, Helen McEntee.

Plans were in place for a new station to be built at a site in Caltragh after the Office of Public Works purchased land.

However, it was decided after the purchase that instead, a refurbishment of the existing Garda Station would suffice.

Speaking to OceanFM News, Deputy Harkin says if there is an emergency outside of the working hours for the Ballyshannon Armed Response Unit, they would have to come as far afield as Galway to respond.
