Minister for OPW visits Strandhill, Rosses Point to see coastal erosion

Money is not now an issue when it comes to dealing with the problem of coastal erosion in Strandhill.

That was the message of the government minister with responsibility for the Office of Public Works, Patrick O Donovan, when he visited the seaside resort this morning.

He pointed out the priority now was formulating a plan, ensuring that measures taken did not cause further problems, and doing it all within the law.

Harry Keaney reports from Strandhill:

****
The roar of the sea at Strandhill.

For some it’s an attraction, such as for the numerous surfers in the water this morning, as well as for those sitting and enjoying their coffee and relaxing along the promenade.

But at times in places such as Strandhill and Rosses Point, both of which Minister O Donovan visited this morning, that roar is also a menacing sound, as the sea eats into coast and its sand dunes during storms.

Now in Strandhill, there’s move to put a plan in place, as the minister outlined.

And among the messages he had for local residents, businesses and members of a coastal erosion committee was the money was not the problem.

Minister O Donovan also emphasised the necessity of works complying with the law.

The minister also hit out at some Irish politicians in Europe who vote for laws that impact on the ability of areas such as Strandhill and Rosses Point to deal with coastal erosion.
