More needs to be done addressing mental health during Covid-19

Research carried out by a Sligo/Leitrim TD and his team has found many people feel that Covid-19 has had, and will continue to have, long term effects on mental health.

Fianna Fail Deputy, Marc MacSharry says they questioned people across numerous professions such as GP’s, Coroners, Student Unions and members of the Gardaí.

Some of the findings show 91% believe Covid-19 has had a detrimental impact on mental health, 88% feel the government isn’t doing enough and 91% believe more funding is needed for services.

Speaking in the Dail today, Deputy MacSharry highlighted some of the criticisms.

Deputy MacSharry also acknowledged that the Minister of Health’s job isn’t made easier by the fact that the overall health budget for mental health has decreased noticeably since the 1980’s.
