McSharry improves Irish record

Just hours after achieving the Olympic qualifying standard for Tokyo in the women’s 100 metres breaststroke, Sligo’s Mona McSharry improved her own Irish record in the event on the first finals night of the Irish Olympic Team Trials.

The Grange woman had achieved the Olympic qualifying time (1m 07.07secs) earlier on Tuesday, swimming 1min 06.97secs in her heat.

In Tuesday evening’s semi-final, she improved that national record time again, clocking 1min 06.29secs.

The final of the 100m breaststroke takes place on Wednesday evening – and is being streamed live on the RTÉ Player.

McSharry is due to swim in the 200 metres backstroke event on Friday.
