Donegal TD brands excuses for closing local banks as ‘pathetic’

‘A pathetic example’ is how a Donegal TD has described the excuses provided by the Bank of Ireland CEO, Francesca McDonagh in justifying the decision to shut a number of branches of the bank in Sligo, Donegal and Leitrim.

Bank of Ireland announced earlier this year that they would shut 103 branches across the Country due to more people moving towards online banking in preference to counter services.

Francesca McDonagh claimed yesterday that the decision was taken over this trend developing over the last decade and not just during the  Covid-19 pandemic.

Sinn Fein Finance spokesperson Pearse Doherty says she omitted to mention that the reason footfall started to fall was due to the Banks withdrawing a number of services from many smaller branches.
