Fears towns will lose business because of BoI closures

There are fears that towns in which Bank of Ireland branches are closing will lose business to other towns.

The branches to be shut include Drumshanbo and Manorhamilton in Leitrim, and Bundoran in Donegal.

Sligo Fine Gael Councillor Gerard Mullaney says it’s a particular blow to the south Sligo area with bank branches closing in both Ballymote and Tubbercurry.

He fears that people throughout a wide area of south Sligo will now do their banking in Boyle, in County Roscommon, taking spin-off business away from Ballymote.

Sligo Councillor Thomas Healy said it was disappointing to hear that the Bank of Ireland branch in Ballymote is closing, particularly as there was a campaign a few years ago to keep banking services in the town.

That followed the closure of Ulster Bank and the reduction of counter services from Bank of Ireland.

Now, he says, all will be closed.
