Sligo has the highest commercial vacancy rate in the country.

It’s emerged that the commercial vacancy rate in Sligo is the highest in the country.

The commercial vacancy rate in the north west County increased by 1.0 percentage points to 19.9% in the fourth quarter of 2020 according to the latest GeoView Commercial Property Report.

Sligo accounted for 1.8% of the State’s total commercial stock of 211,677.

The analysis also found that Ballybofey in Co. Donegal, at 29.2%, was the town with the highest commercial vacancy rate amongst 80 towns sampled

The findings of the report suggest that the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic on the commercial property landscape in Ireland has not yet been fully realised. However, key trends and indicators are beginning to emerge.

Dara Keogh, is the CEO of GeoDirectory.  He says the high figures of vacancy can’t be entirely put down to the Covid-19 pandemic

Sligo Leitrim TD Marc MacSharry says the findings in the study comes as no major surprise.

The Fianna Fail TD has warned that many high street commercial buildings will never return to trading again and should be considered for residential use.

Deputy MacSharry says that Town and City living initiative most be rolled out right across the North West.
