Sligo councillor and solicitor welcomes Justice Department moves on parental alienation

A Sligo councillor and solicitor is welcoming the news that the Department of Justice is including the issue of parental alienation in its action plan.

Thirty local authorities around the country have passed motions asking the government to address the issue of parental alienation.

The Department of Justice has now announced research into the approaches to parental alienation taken by other jurisdictions, including public consultation, in its 2021 Action Plan.

Parental alienation takes many forms and is mostly seen when one parent negatively interferes in the relationship between a child and the other parent.

Sligo county councillor and solicitor Sinead Maguire says public consultation and research by the Department of Justice is an important step in dealing with this issue which, she added, is a form of child abuse that needs to be legislated against.
