English & Travers in 24-strong Irish team

Donegal’s Mark English and Sligo-based athlete John Travers have both been included in the Ireland team for next month’s European Indoor Athletics Championships in Poland.

The 24-strong selection was officially confirmed by Athletics Ireland on Monday afternoon.

English, a European bronze medallist in 2019, broke his own 800 metres Irish record at the weekend when winning at the Elite Indoor Micro Meet in Abbotstown in a time of 1 min 46.10 seconds.

His Finn Valley clubmate, John Fitzsimons is also on the team, in the same event.

Travers, who won the 3000m on Saturday, is one of three Irish athletes who’ll compete over the 3k event in Poland.

It will be his fifth European Indoor Championships.

Joining him on the 3000m start-line will be Darragh McEhinney (who’s coached by Sligo’s Emmet Dunleavy) and Seán Tobin.

There is no place on the team for North Sligo AC’s Christopher O’Donnell despite his 400m success in Dublin at the weekend.

The European Indoor Championships will take place in Torun, Poland from March 5-7th.
