Roads money: Allocations welcomed but there’s work for more

Donegal has received the third highest county allocation in the country in the latest round of government funding for regional and local roads,

Agriculture, Food and Marine Minister and Donegal Fianna Fail TD Charlie McConalogue, says the allocation of more than €34m is of crucial importance to the county’s economy.

South Donegal Fianna Fail Councillor Micheal Naughton says that while the increased allocation is welcome, there’s a need for more works to be done, particularly considering the mileage of roads in the county and the absence of railways.

Sligo has received an allocation of more than €15m, an increase of about half a million on last year.

It includes a quarter million for work on the Eastern Garavogue Bridge.

There’s also money for work on a number of bridges, including at Foyogues; Doon Bridge, Gurteen; Markievicz Bridge in Sligo; Kilfree Bridge, Cloonacool South Bridge and Annagh Bridge near Tubbercurry.

There’s €80,000 for safety improvement work at Jinks Cross, at Carraroe, where there’s been about 14 accidents recorded over a four year period.

The R284 Gleann Road has received a further allocation this year of €120,000 under the Specific Improvement Grant, and the Burton Street Link Road in Sligo town has received an allocation of €400,000 to further advance this Scheme.
