Sligo’s Mona McSharry has been named as the Southern Area Conference’s female ‘Freshman of the week’ in the United States after winning three finals with the University of Tennessee (UT) swimming team against Kentucky in an intervarsity meet.
McSharry won the 100 and 200 metres breaststroke, before helping Tennessee to victory in the 400 metres freestyle medley.
She swam UT’s second leg in the race, turning in a split of 51.08.
This is the first conference award for McSharry – since she began a swimming scholarship at the University last August.
The Grange woman spoke to Ocean FM Sport at Christmas as part of the station’s sports review of 2020.
