Now not the time to open schools, says Harkin

A Sligo/Leitrim TD and a former secondary school teacher is welcoming the government’s U-turn on a decision to have sixth years and students with special needs attend school from next week, while other students learned remotely.

Independent Deputy Marian Harkin says teachers and students should not have been asked to do what people in other sectors — including TDs meeting for Dail sessions — are not required to do.

She says that despite the importance of ensuring education for students, now was not the time to reopen schools, even on on a limited basis.
