Sligo councillors join in call for support for airport

A number of Sligo councillors are calling for the setting up of a cross-community task force to ensure the future of Sligo Airport.

They say the task force should include the airport board, Northern Western and Regional Assembly, Sligo Chamber, Sligo BID, the IDA, Sligo Bay Lifeboat Station RNLI, IT Sligo and other interested parties.

They are calling for funding to ensure the airport continues to be the base for the Air Sea Rescue Service as well as doing works required by the Irish Aviation Authority.

They also want operational support costs to be provided so as to ensure the airport can implement a five-year strategy.

The councillors, Sinead Maguire, Donal Gilroy, Thomas Walsh and Martin Baker, all directors of the airport, have motions on the issue down for discussion at the first monthly meeting of the council this year on Monday next.

Cllr Walsh points out that the search and rescue base at Sligo Airport is the busiest in the country.
