Renewed call to make Kiltyclogher a heritage village

There are renewed calls for the government to provide funding for the development of Kiltyclogher in north Leitrim as a heritage and cultural village, an idea that was supported by Leitrim councillors four years ago.

With its proximity to the border, Kiltyclogher suffered during the Troubles with nearby roads often impassable. Lack of jobs and emigration have also been deep-rooted problems for the area.

Kiltyclogher is the home village of 1916 signatory Sean MacDiarmada and it was on the centenary of the 1916 Rising that the idea of Kiltyclogher as a heritage and cultural centre was supported by all six councillors in north Leitrim.

Fine Gael Councillor Sean MacDermott now says that without funding, progress cannot be made on turning the idea into reality.
