Armagh’s Tony McEntee is new Sligo football manager

Armagh All-Ireland winning footballer Tony McEntee has been named as the new Sligo senior football manager.

His appointment was confirmed by Sligo GAA on Thursday night.

McEntee, who’s also a multiple All-Ireland club football winning player and manager with Crossmaglen Rangers, has been given a three-year term with the Yeats County.

His appointment follows the departure of Paul Taylor earlier this month after two years in charge.

McEntee will be assisted by Mayo’s Joe Keane who was also part of Taylor’s coaching team.

Keane and McEntee previously worked together under Stephen Rochford in Mayo.

Galway’s Seán Boyle will also be part of the backroom team as strength and conditioning coach.

The new manager spoke to Ocean FM Sport’s Austin O’Callaghan about his decision to go for the Sligo job:

Sligo GAA Chairman Brendan Leonard says McEntee’s plan for Sligo over the next three years impressed the selection committee:

As a player, McEntee won a senior All-Ireland title with Armagh in 2002 and a national league title in 2005.

He has four All-Ireland club championship titles as a player with his native Crossmaglen – and subsquently led the south Armagh club to two more All-Ireland titles as manager.

Tourlestrane’s Eamonn O’Hara was also in contention, and had been viewed as a frontrunner for the manager’s job.

However, in the end, Sligo have gone for a candidate from outside the county.
