TUI call for schools to close on December 18th

A teachers’ union has called for schools to be allowed to close early for Christmas so that students and teachers have more time to restrict their movements before meeting elderly or high risk relatives.

The Minister for education confirmed yesterday that all schools will remain open until Tuesday 22 December.

The Teachers’ Union of Ireland has called for “serious consideration” to be given to closing schools on Friday 18 December.  The Labour Party have already supported closing the schools on this date/

The TUI said such a move would also boost morale among staff and students.

They claim that such a closure would be a positive signal of the department’s intention to protect the well-being of school communities.

All schools are obliged to close for the holiday on Tuesday 22 December. They are due to reopen on 6 January.
