Sligo footballers return positive Covid tests

The Sligo senior football squad has been hit by a Covid outbreak just six days before the county’s Connacht senior football semi-final against Galway.

It’s emerged that one Sligo player underwent a Covid test at the weekend, which returned a positive result.

The rest of the panel, as well as management personnel, are understood to have been subsequently tested.

Ocean FM understands that an unspecified number of these tests have also come back positive.

The squad is following HSE public health protocols.

On the basis that the affected players will be required to self-isolate for 14 days, the positive cases raise a big question mark around Saturday’s semi-final at Pearse Stadium in Galway going ahead.

Sligo hurlers were forced to pull out of the Christy Ring Cup game against Derry two weeks ago following a positive Covid test for one of the players. Other panel members were deemed close contacts at the time.

There are three players who play for the county’s footballers and hurlers.

The Connacht football final is scheduled for Sunday, November 15th, which appears to give very little leeway for any postponement or re-scheduling of Saturday’s game.

GAA President John Horan indicated on Monday that only All-Ireland semi-finals or finals could conceivably be postponed/rescheduled because of a Covid outbreak, given the the condensed timeframe for completing the championships.
