Japanese trawlers fishing for tuna in north Atlantic is nothing new, says KFO boss

The CEO of the Killybegs Fishermen’s Organisation says Japanese trawlers are entitled to fish for tuna in the North Atlantic outside the 200 mile Irish limit.

Sean O Donoghue says it’s something that has been going on for decades.

Concern has recently been voiced about the presence of Japanese trawlers fishing for Blue Fin tuna in the North Atlantic to the edge of the Irish fishing zone.

The vessels are said to travel for two months from Japan to catch Blue Fin tuna, which are a delicacy in Japan and, which some observers say, could be worth millions to the Irish fishing industry.

Irish trawlers are allowed only to catch tuna and release them for scientific purposes.

Donegal Deputy Padraig MacLochlainn says the current system is unjust and he is calling on the Marine minister to address the latest concerns.

Mr O Donoghue had been telling Ocean FM News what the situation is at present.
