Gardai concerned about lack of armed cover

Gardai who serve in border areas are becoming increasingly concerned over the lack of armed cover which, they believe, could put them and the public at risk.

It follows violent incidents along the border, fears of a no-deal Brexit and a hard border, and threats from dissident republicans who oppose gardai and PSNI members either side of the border.

It’s a particular concern for gardai in Donegal because of the challenges posed by situations than arise along the border, sometimes in remote rural areas.

Garda Brendan O Connor, a Garda Representative Association spokesman in Donegal, says there is excellent armed cover when it’s available but sometimes gardai might be relying on units to travel from Cavan, Mayo or Galway.
