Closing the Border would require serious consideration



A Donegal TD has urged people to consider the huge impact that closing the border would have on the island of Ireland.

 

Deputy Joe McHugh has made the calls after fears were expressed that the number of cases in the North West was as a result of cross border interaction.

 

 

Several calls have been made on the government to consider the move in light of the spike in the numbers of Covid-19 in Northern Ireland over the past week with many fearing it is contributing to increased numbers in the Republic of Ireland.

 

Donegal TD Joe McHugh says that although there is genuine concern in relation to the increasing numbers of Covid-19 consideration has to be given to a number of other factors including Brexit:

 

 

 

Deputy McHugh says there is already a highly visible Garda presence on the nation’s roads.  He says if the spread of Covid- 19 is to be stopped personal responsibility will be key to stop the spread of Covid-19.

 

 

 

With the EU and UK officials currently holding talks in Brussels, to try to resolve the ongoing controversy over the Brexit withdrawal agreement, aimed at avoiding a hard border on the island of Ireland Joe McHugh says that there is a genuine will to get a deal across the line, but there will be challenges including a huge local one on fisheries:
