Former Sligo Rovers player Robbie Brunton dies

The death has been announced of the former Sligo Rovers defender Robbie Brunton, following an illness.

He was 47 – and had cancer.

The news was confirmed by the League of Ireland players’ union – the PFAI – on Thursday morning.

Brunton developed a fine reputation as a teak-tough all-action left-back and his combative and  committed style of play proved popular with Sligo Rovers supporters during his two seasons at the Showgrounds.

He signed for Sligo Rovers in 1994 as manager Willie McStay was departing for Celtic – and made 59 appearances for Rovers during the 94/95 and 95/96 seasons, scoring three goals.

Brunton, who was from Dublin, also went on to play for Derry City, Bohemians, Kilkenny City, Dundalk and Monaghan United, as well as Irish League clubs Coleraine, Newry City and Cliftonville.
