No change in Donegal local property tax

Donegal councillors have today accepted the recommendation of Council officials that the local property rate should not be changed.

As a result the decision the 15% increase on the baseline introduced in 2020 will remain in place for another year.

Calls for a reduction were made but officials claimed that returning to the baseline would see income fall by over €1.6 million in 2021, while if the rate were decreased to 15% below the baseline, income would fall to over €3.3 million.

Independent Donegal MD Councillor Niamh Kennedy explained to the Ocean FM news room why she voted to reduce the tax:

Donegal has a new county councillor.

He is Donal “Mandy” Kelly who has been co-opted onto the council, replacing his father Donal, who stood down.

The seat had previously been held by Cllr Kelly’s brother Manus, who died following an accident during last year’s Donegal International Rally.
