Cllr Casserly: ‘Frustration’ over lack of answers about Sligo Garda Station

A Sligo councillor who attended a meeting today between a representative of An Garda Siochana and a number of local councillors about Sligo Garda Station says many questions still remain unanswered.

There had been plans for a new Garda regional headquarters in Sligo, with a site having been obtained at Caltragh, near the Caltragh interchange on the N4 Inner Relief Road.

However, it was later announced that it had been decided not to go ahead with a new station but to carry out renovations to the existing station instead.

That’s despite claims that the current station is not fit for purpose, with gardai having walked out on one occasion in the past.

Independent Councillor Marie Casserly spoke to Ocean FM News after today’s meeting and outlined the questions councillors had:

Cllr Casserly says today’s meeting was ‘quite frustrating’ because of the lack of answers.

The issue of a new garda station has been ongoing for more than five years now.

Almost two-and-a-half years ago, in April 2018, the then Justice Minister Charlie Flanagan confirmed that a new station was to be based in Caltragh.

Speaking to Ocean FM News from Athlone, Minister Flanagan said work on the new station could progress with the acquisition of the Caltragh site.

The news was welcomed by the sitting Fine Gael TD at the time, Tony McLoughlin.

However, despite those announcements and welcoming remarks two and a half years ago, there’s now no clarity if a new garda station will be built in Sligo.
