Sligo’s Chris O’Donnell wins hat-trick of national titles

North Sligo Athletic Club’s Christopher O’Donnell is celebrating a third consecutive national senior men’s 400 metres title and winning Sunday’s final at windy Morton Stadium in Santry in a time of 47.12secs.

In tricky conditions, it wasn’t his quickest time of the year but the North Sligo man, who’s based at Loughborough University in England, was thrilled and relieved to have completed the hat-trick of national titles when he spoke to Ocean FM Sport’s Austin O’Callaghan.

Chris is also entered entered the men’s 200 metres which take place at Santry next weekend.

The championships are being spread across two weekends because of the Covid restrictions.

Sligo-based John Travers was pipped to the gold medal in the men’s senior 5000m final on Sunday by Darragh McElhinney, who’s coached by another Sligo man – Emmet Dunleavy.

There was another success for Sligo AC’s Michael Morgan as he raced to gold in the junior men’s 5000m final on Saturday.
