Rovers snatch dramatic win against Waterford

A free-kick deep in injury time from Alex Cooper gave Sligo Rovers a dramatic 2-1 win at home to Waterford in their re-arranged Premier Division game on Tuesday evening.

Cooper’s strike in the 93rd minute gave Liam Buckley’s side the perfect lift after last Friday’s 3-0 loss to Cork City.

Waterford had led for much of the game thanks to Michael O’Connor’s 16th minute goal.

Ronan Coughlan brought Rovers level midway through the second-half, before Cooper supplied the winner with his free-kick in stoppage time.

The result lifts Rovers above Derry and Cork, up to seventh in the table.

The only thing which took some gloss of the win was the sight of Ronan Coughlan on crutches after the game. The extent of his injury isn’t yet known.

Rovers welcome Dundalk to the Showgrounds on Saturday evening (kick-off: 5pm).
