Major funding announced for two local greenway projects

A total of 800,000 euro worth of funding has been announced for two major greenway projects in the north west.

€300,000 of the funding has been allocated to the Sligo greenway which runs from Collooney to Cavan.

The funding will support the greenways strategy and help Sligo County Council carry out the initial design and environmental evaluation for the proposed 35.5km route.

Meanwhile, 500,000 euro has been approved for Sligo/Leitrim & Northern Counties Railway Greenway.

This allocation will aim to bring plans for the development of a 75 km greenway from Blacklion to Sligo Town through the Statutory Process and help progress the 26 km greenway from the Ulster Canal north of Castle Saunderson to link with the Cavan-Leitrim Greeway at Belturbet.

Minster for State Frank Feighan says today’s announcement is a major boost for tourism in the North West:

Sligo Independent Alliance Councillor Marie Casserly said former Transport Minister Shane Ross had been a keen supporter of greenways.
