Sligo GAA to finalise club competition structures



The revised club championship structures for Sligo GAA adult competitions will be ratified at a meeting of the county’s management committee this Monday night (June 29th).

If passed, the championship draws are scheduled to take place on Wednesday, July 1st.

Two championship formats were circulated to clubs in recent weeks.

The preferred choice is option 2, which would see the senior championship played as two groups of five. There will be no adult leagues this year – although Sligo GAA has introduced a divisional competition to provide clubs with games after the championships are completed.

Below are the championship formats to be presented for approval this Monday:

CHAMPIONSHIPS

Senior Football Championship 2020-10 Teams

2 Groups of 5 Teams

First team drawn into Group 1, second team drawn into Group 2, 3rd team drawn into Group 1 and so on.

Round robin league (5 weekends)

Top two placed teams in each group qualify for the semi-finals as follows:

1st Group 1 v 2nd Group 2;

1st Group 2 v 2nd Group 1.

Two Semi-final winners to Final.

Bottom two placed teams in each group go to Relegation semi-finals with Relegation semi-final losers moving into Relegation final. Loser relegated to Intermediate for 2021.

4th Group 1 v 5th Group 2;

4th Group 2 v 5th Group 1.

Two Semi-final losers to Relegation Final.

Finish on the day regulations apply to ALL Semi Finals and Final replays in this competition only (including relegation).


Intermediate Football Championship 2020-10 Teams

2 Groups of 5 Teams

First team drawn into Group 1, second team drawn into Group 2, 3rd team drawn into Group 1 and so on.

Round robin league (5 weekends)

Top two placed teams in each group qualify for the semi-finals as follows:

1st Group 1 v 2nd Group 2;

1st Group 2 v 2nd Group 1.

Two Semi-final winners to Final.

Bottom two placed teams in each group go to Relegation semi-finals with Relegation semi-final losers moving into Relegation final. Loser relegated to Junior A for 2021.

Junior A Championship 2020-8 Teams

2 Groups of 4.

First team drawn into Group 1, second team drawn into Group 2, 3rd team drawn into Group 1 and so on.

Round robin League (3 weekends)

Top two teams in each Group through to Semi-finals. The Two first placed teams play the Two second placed teams (i.e. 1st Group 1 v 2nd Group 2; 1st Group 2 v 2nd Group 1) in 2 Semi-finals. Winners through to final.

Bottom (4th placed) Teams in each group go to Relegation final with loser relegated to Junior B for 2021.

Junior B Championship 2020-12 Teams

4 groups of 3 Teams.

First team drawn into Group 1, second team drawn into Group 2, third team drawn into Group 3, fourth team drawn into Group 4, fifth team drawn into Group 1 and so on.

Round robin League (3 weekends) – one game at home and one game away for each team.

Top Two teams in each group progress to quarter-finals. Knockout stages as follows:

Quarter Finals (group winners have home advantage): QF1: 1st Group 1 v 2nd Group 2; QF2: 1st Group 2 v 2nd Group 1; QF3: 1st Group 3 v 2nd Group 4; QF4: 1st Group 4 v 2nd Group 3.

Semi Finals (neutral venues): Winner QF1 v Winner QF4; Winner QF2 v Winner QF 3.

Two Semi-final winners to final.

No relegation.

Martin Brennan Cup

Knockout competition to be played midweek in October/November pending public health situation. Teams/dates to be confirmed.


Divisional Football Championships

Planned provisionally for October/November pending public health situation. Dates TBC.

2 Groups of 3 Teams in North, South and East Divisions. 1 Group of 3 and a two-legged playoff for remaining two teams in West Division.

Round Robin (3 weekends) for 3 teams Groups with one home game and one away game per club. Group winner to Divisional Championship Final.

West Division two-legged playoff – two teams play each other home and away. Aggregate score over both games decides who advances to Divisional Championship final. If aggregate scores are tied at the end of the two games a replay at  neutral venue will take place.

13 a-side with option of 11 a-side if a team has not got 13 players available. If 11 a-side is requested, club making request limited to using a maximum of 12 players, i.e. one additional player permitted to take part.
