Contrasting managerial reaction to intercounty return plan

There’s been mixed reaction to the GAA’s revised intercounty football league and championship return in October.

The football will begin with the remaining two rounds of the Allianz Football League, before teams turn into their provincial championships.

The championship will be run off on a straight knockout this year, with the four provincial winners advancing to the All-Ireland semi-finals.

The All-Ireland qualifiers have been scrapped in football for 2020.

The All-Ireland football final is fixed for Saturday, December 19th at Croke Park.

Sligo manager Paul Taylor, whose side are still in the promotion hunt in Division four, is delighted that the the return to play will begin with the league.

The Yeats County will resume Division 4 with an away trip to Carlow on Oct 17/18th before playing Limerick at Markievicz Park on Oct 24/25th.

They will then have a two-week gap before taking on Galway in a Connacht semi-final at Pearse Stadium on Nov 7/8th (New York are not part of this year’s Connacht Championship, because of Covid).

Leitrim were hoping that players would get a longer break before the league and championship began.

Instead, Terry Hyland’s side face two decisive matches in Division three against Down (A) and Tipperary (H) before taking on Mayo in the Connacht Championship. These three matches will be played on successive weekends. The Leitrim boss gave his gut reaction to Ocean FM Sport’s Austin O’Callaghan:
