Love Leitrim welcomes High Court ruling on gas terminal project

A Leitrim environmental group is welcoming a decision of the High Court to allow Friends of the Irish Environment to question how a list of European projects included one which, it is feared, could result in fracked gas being imported into Ireland.

That’s despite a ban on fracking here following a Bill introduced in the last Dail by former Sligo/Leitrim Fine Gael Deputy Tony McLoughlin.

The Shannon Liquified Natural Gas project is a natural gas terminal which is being proposed by a U.S. company and would be located in Ballylongford, Co Kerry.

It has been included on the European Projects of Common Interest list, which entitles it to the most rapid treatment possible.

Fine Gael and Fianna Fail MEPs, with the exception of Maria Walsh, voted this week to include the project on the list, along with dozens of other fossil fuel infrastructure projects.

Chairperson of Love Leitrim, Jamie Murphy, has been telling Ocean FM News why people in the north west should be concerned about the proposed terminal.
