Cosgrove challenges Labour to become relevant again

The Labour candidate in the Sligo-Leitrim constituency has attributed the party’s below par performance in the 2020 general election to a issues Labour have in getting their message across to the public.

Nessa Cosgrove also fears that as long as party members such as former minister Joan Burton continue to contest elections, Labour will fail to make inroads.

She spoke to Ocean FM’s Niall Delaney on Sunday:

According to the Sligo-Leitrim tally figures, she has received 1,141 votes.

Having also contested the local elections in 2019 for Labour, Cosgrove says the party faces a number of challenges.  Her campaign team consisted of six or seven members and, as a result, they were confined to canvassing in the greater Sligo town area and could not get their message out to the wider constituency.

She was happy with how she polled and securing 45 votes in North Roscommon and 50 votes in Ballyshannon were achievements that filled here with pride.  She supports Labour passionately and dismisses the notion that she may have been more successful running as an independent.  She did however say Labour needs to change and remove some of the old guard. She did express confidence in leader Brendan Howlin as the man to continue to lead the party.
