Teachers strike for better pay

Teachers across the north west are on strike today in a row over pay.

The strikes have resulted in severe disruptions to education services in Sligo, Leitrim and Donegal.

The Teachers Union of Ireland says the strike’s taking place because those hired after 2011 are paid at a lower rate than colleagues, despite doing the same work.

Brendan Green is a teacher in St Claire’s Comprehensive College in Manorhamilton and is also a local TUI spokesperson.

He says the two tier pay system has destroyed morale in staff rooms in schools throughout the Country
