North West TUI members on the picket line

Teachers throughout the north west who are members of the TUI union are on strike today in a row over pay.

Affected schools throughout the region are closed.

Speaking to Ocean FM’s John Lynch, local TUI spokesman Brendan Greene, a teacher in St Clare’s Comprehensive School in Manorhamilton, outlines the background to today’s industrial action.

Among those on the picket line today are teachers from IT Sligo and nearby Ballinode College.

Dr Jacqueline O’Toole, a lecturer in sociology in IT Sligo spoke to me this morning.

Meanwhile the Association of Secondary Teachers in Ireland says a ballot of its member for industrial action is underway on the same issue.

The union’s also holding a protest outside the Department later in support of their TUI colleagues.

Sligo teacher Kieran Christie is General Secretary of the Association of Secondary Teachers in Ireland.
