Sligo footballers win again

Sligo made it two wins out of two in Division 4 of the Allianz Football League on Sunday with a dramatic 0-15 to 0-14 win against Antrim at Markievicz Park.

Team captain Paddy O’Connor gave an inspired display at midfield, contributing six of his side’s points tally.

The win takes Sligo top of the table on scoring difference, ahead of Limerick, after two rounds of matches.

Listen back to how the Ocean FM Sport commentary team of Cathal Mullaney and Mark Breheny described the closing moments of the game:

Antrim felt aggrieved in added time when, with his side trailing by two points, Paddy Cunningham kicked a close-in free over the bar believing that there was still time for another passage of play.

However, match referee Niall McKenna blew for full-time as the resultant kick-out was taken, much to the Ulster side’s dismay. Cunningham said the ref had indicated to him before the free that there was more time to play:

Sligo manager Paul Taylor gave this postmatch assessment to Ocean FM Sport’s Cathal Mullaney:

Elsewhere, Sligo women’s gaelic footballers suffered their second league defeat in a row on Sunday when they were beaten by Kildare in Division 3 by 2-13 to 1-8. Micheál Bohan’s side actually led Kildare by 1-7 to 1-4 at half-time in Newbridge but they managed just one additional score in the second half as the lillywhites ran out comfortable winners.
