Proposal to plant band of native trees in Donegal

The Green Party’s candidate in Donegal is proposing that farmers, public bodies and private companies in the county plant a continuous, unbroken band of trees runinng from Ardara in the south to Malin town in the north east.

Michael White says the trees would be native species that would enable a diversity of wildlife to thrive.

His party is proposing that take-up of the scheme would be driven by payment of a special premium to farmers for planting one hectare of woodland on their farms.

Speaking to Ocean FM News, he says opposition to tree planting has been largely because of the planting of non-native species that creates dead zones.
