Minister says payments will be made to creches

The Children’s Minister says payments will be made to childcare services that close on a day of protest scheduled for next Wednesday.

It follows reports crèches had been told they wouldn’t get funding if they took part in the action.

Among those who criticised such a move, if it were made, was Sligo/Leitrim Sinn Fein candidate Martin Kenny.

But Minister Katherine Zappone says payments WILL be made.

However, this is on condition providers find an alternative suitable date for parents to avail of childcare services, in lieu of the day it closes.

She says she’s instructed the Department of Children to authorise the payments for the day of protest.
