Swimming lessons should be mandatory for Schools in the NW



“3,000 people have lost their lives through drowning over the past decade.”

That’s according to former green party local election candidate, Leslie O’Hora who is calling for free and mandatory swimming lessons across the North West.

Research by Ireland’s Childhood Mortality Register suggests that drowning occurs more commonly with young males who engage in summer water-based activities and with children who are aged between one to four years of age.

Seeking a seat in the Seanad for 2020, Leslie O’Hora says seeing as the North West accounts for 10% of all drownings over the past decade, schools across the northwest should implement a swimming education scheme as soon as possible:
