The funeral takes place in Sligo this morning of a former mayor of the town, John Harrison.
The former Fianna Fail councillor was a former member of Sligo Corporation, later Sligo Borough Council, a former secretary of Feis Shligigh and a former principal of Ballinode Community College.
In December 1997, he was also among those accorded the town’s highest honour, Freeman of the Borough.
In keeping with long-established tradition for those given this honour, his funeral will take a route through the town following his 11:30 am funeral Mass in the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.
Starting at about 12:30 pm, the cortege will be accompanied by a Guard of Honour of elected members and former members of Sligo Borough Council along Adelaide Street, Wine Street, into Stephen Street, Bridge Street, Teeling Street and up Pearse Road on its way to Sligo Cemetery.
