Calls made for social housing to be constructed in Connaughton Road Car Park

The mayor of Sligo is calling for a town car park that had been home to an extended Traveller family for more than 30 years to be used as a site for a social housing apartment complex.

Last month, the McGinley family left the local authority car park, located off Connaughton Road, when they moved to a site at Finisklin.

The car park is now vacant but with the council having placed concrete barricades at the entrance, vehicles cannot enter it, resulting in questions about what is planned for it in the long term.

Solidarity People Before Profit Councillor Gino O’ Boyle says building an apartment complex on the site would help reduce numbers on the housing list, including those on the Housing Assistance Payment, or HAP scheme, as well as those on the Rental Accommodation, or RAS, scheme.
