Counties with smaller populations have lowest penalty points

Leitrim and Sligo are among the counties in which motorists have the lowest number of penalty points on their licences.

Last year, Sligo motorists had 6,130 points on their licences while those in Leitrim had 2,904.

Donegal motorists had 11,704 points.

The highest number of penalty points were in some of the most highly-populated areas of the country, such as Dublin, Cork and Galway, according to figures released to the thejournal.ie in response to a Freedom of Information Request.

Penalty points remain on a driver’s licence for three years, with 12 points resulting in disqualification for six months.

Novice and learner permit drivers face disqualification if they receive seven points.
