Donegal nurse dies following tragic accident in Australia

A young Donegal woman has died in Australia following a tragic accident.

Mary Ellen Molloy, a 26-year old from Ardara, daughter of Terence and Angela Molloy, was working in Melbourne as a nurse at the Royal Melbourne Hospital.

She died after a branch from a tree fell on a taxi in which she was travelling yesterday (Friday) afternoon.

Arrangements are being made for the return of her remains to Ireland.

Another young woman in the car, also thought to be from Donegal, was hurt.

Donegal TD , Leas Cheann Comhairle and family friend Pat the Cope Gallagher said that when news of her passing broke last evening, a deep sense of shock and numbness descended over Donegal

He said she had emigrated to Melbourne 16 months ago and had been home twice since.

He added: “She made a profound impact on all who encountered her in her work at Melbourne hospital was the comment of the Director of Nursing with whom I spoke to day.”

He extended his sympathy to her parents Terence and Angela and to her siblings John Ross and Karl Joe, as well as her many aunts, uncles including Cllr Anthony Molloy, cousins and her extended family.
