Sligo GAA records surplus for 2019, legacy debt halved

Sligo GAA has recorded a surplus of €68,839 in its end-of-year accounts for 2019.

Presenting his report to delegates at Sligo’s Annual Convention in the Clayton Hotel on Tuesday night, Treasure Peter Greene revealed that Sligo’s annual turnover in 2019 again exceeded €1 million at €1,168,003. Total expenditure was €970,256. The county’s operating profit was €197,747.

The figures show an upward curve, against a backdrop of a legacy debt which stood at €1.4 million in 2014. Today, that debt has been halved – and currently stands at €655,000.

Greene reported Club Sligo had another successful year, generating €171K while sponsorship brought in €163K. Total commercial and sponsorship income was €370K. Gate receipts took in €125K, the county’s highest return at the turnstiles for five years.

County team expenses across and football and hurling increased by €52,000 this year to €572,471.

The Treasurer did sound a note of caution regarding the sustainability of the role of a county board Treasurer as it’s currently configured.

“It is rapidly becoming clear that given the level of income being managed, the responsibility for ensuring a county remains profitable, the involvement in controlling costs and the time required to ensure this all happens is becoming untenable. It is an issue that I believe will come into focusat national level very shortly.”

Greene had completed his five-year term as Treasurer with Sligo GAA, but a new bye-law was adopted on Wednesday night, which enabled him to stay in the post for another year.#

Sligo GAA Chairman Brendan Leonard told Ocean FM Sport that he wants to see Sligo GAA debt free within the next few years:

County Secretary Bernadine McGauran was re-elected to her post following a contest with Buninadden’s Keith Henry.

Former county Chairman Joe Taaffe is the new Central Council delegate – after Tubbercurry’s John Murphy stepped down, having served his five-year term.

There is also a new Coaching Officer. Peader Niland from St Mary’s was voted in ahead of incumbent John McPartland (Snr).
