Gardaí in County are using a new phone app that allows them to access vehicle and driver history at the roadside.
The ‘Mobility App’ was unveiled by the Road Safety Authority and An Garda Siochana in August of this year and is rolling out to personnel around the country.
The app allows Gardaí to access a drivers addresses, penalty point history, status on tax, NCT and insurance as well as allowing them to issue fixed charge penalty points.
As an example of how it’s used, Gardaí in Ballymote used the app recently after they saw a vehicle travelling along the N17 with a faulty headlight.
Using the app, Gardaí discovered the driver had not taxed the vehicle since February nor did the vehicle have a valid NCT.
The driver was issued penalty points, the car was seized and the driver now faces a court appearance.
