Sligo councillor says Ireland among worst in Europe for access to new medicines

A Sligo councillor says Ireland is among the worst countries in western Europe when it comes to access to new medicines.

Independent Socialist Councillor Declan Bree was commenting this afternoon after proposing at a council meeting today to call on the Minister for Health and the government to take steps to ensure people with multiple sclerosis can get access to medicines as soon as they are authorised by the European Commission.

More than 9,000 people and their families in Ireland are living with MS, for which there is no cure.

Cllr Bree said MS is the most common disabling neurological disease affecting young adults.
