HSE budget shortfall is hindering disability services in Leitrim

A Leitrim councillor says a €40m shortfall in the HSE budget for disability services is hindering efforts to provide housing for people with disabilities in their own areas.

Leitrim Independent Councillor Felim Gurn told a meeting of the Regional Health Forum in Galway this week that parents of those with disabilities are getting older, resulting in a need for more services, housing and specially-designed facilities for independent community living.

The health forum meeting heard that the need for residential placements continues to exceed the number of places and funding available locally.

Cllr Gurn says he has been trying for some time to get houses in the Manorhamilton area for young adults with intellectual disabilities.
