FG councillor hits out at FF over attendance at budget meeting

A Sligo Fine Gael councillor is hitting out at Fianna Fail over the attendance of its councillors at this year’s council budget meeting last Monday.

It follows the council’s Fianna Fail cathaoirleach Cllr Tom MacSharry calling on the Fine Gael councillors and Independent Councillor Marie Casserly to support this year’s council budget when the matter is discussed again next Monday evening.

However, Fine Gael is insisting it’s the responsibility of the majority Pact, comprising of councillors from Fianna Fail, as well as Sinn Fein, People Before Profit and Independent Socialist councillors, to pass the budget.

Fine Gael spokesman, Councillor Thomas Walsh, says his party’s position hasn’t changed, adding that Fine Gael has had no contact from Fianna Fail about the budget.

Council Cathaoirleach, Fianna Fail Councillor Tom MacSharry, says that if the budget had been passed last Monday, it would have resulted in certainty for businesses that rates would not be increased in the coming year.

But Councillor Walsh defended his party’s position in relation to its support for business.
