HSE outlines position re: speech/language therapy in St. Cecilia’s School in Cregg House



The HSE has outlined the position in relation to speech and language therapy in St. Cecilia’s School in Cregg House in Sligo.

The temporary vacancy within the School Age Team is currently being filled by an agency senior speech and language therapist, which has been assigned until the end of January 2020.

That’s according to the HSE, which has responded to queries from Ocean FM News about the service.

The following is the full HSE response:

“Therapy Services for children with disabilities in counties Sligo and Leitrim are currently re-configuring under the National Programme, Progressing Disability Services for Children and Young People. In line with this programme, children aged 0-18 years, who have complex developmental needs/disability, are entitled to access the services of the Interdisciplinary Children’s Disability Team, within the area the child resides. Services are provided to children/young people by the Children’s Disability Team according to their home address and not by specific school/educational placements.

“The Speech and Language Therapy Services for St. Cecilia’s School is provided by the Sligo Leitrim School Age Team for Children with disability and complex needs in line with the Progressing Disability Programme.

“A Senior Speech and Language Therapist had been providing service input to the children in St Cecilia’s School since September 2018. This therapist commenced maternity leave in August 2019.

“A temporary vacancy within the School Age Team is currently being filled by an agency Senior Speech and Language therapist, which has been assigned from 31st October, 2019 to the end of January 2020. The post holder took up the position on the 7th of November. This arrangement will provide a consistent service in the absence of the designated post and will remain in situ until the filling of an assigned post within the School Age Team.

“The current Speech and Language Therapist is employed on a fulltime basis and will provide intervention to children attending St. Cecilia’s School on a needs lead basis.”
