€2.5m for cultural plaza in Sligo town; new pontoon at Lough Gill officially opened

Failte Ireland today announced investment of €2.5m to transform the Stephen Street Car Park in Sligo town into a major cultural plaza.

Also today, the official opening took place of a new pontoon, or floating jetty, which will provide improved access to Lough Gill and the Garavogue River for tour boats and water sports enterprises.

Minister of State Sean Canney made the announcement this morning of the investment for the cultural plaza, which will be an all-weather outdoor venue in the town-centre Stephen Street car park.

It will link up with the Garavogue River Trail, a walking and cycling route that will run all the way to Lough Gill.

Today’s announcement follows investment of €201,000 by Failte Ireland into a pontoon at Riverside that was officially opened today.

Orla Carroll, Failte Ireland’s director of product development, says it’s all part of ongoing investment in tourism facilities in Sligo.

Minister Canney says the development of the cultural plaza is a key part in making Sligo a more attractive place to visit:

Minister Canney also took the opportunity when opening the new pontoon today to take a trip on Lough Gill.
