Donegal’s Brendan Boyce finishes 6th in 50-kilometre walk at World Championships

Donegal’s Brendan Boyce finished sixth in the men’s 50-kilometre walk in sweltering temperatures at the World Athletics Championships in Doha.

The Letterkenny man lasted a gruelling four hours in very tough and humid conditions in a race which began at 11:30pm and finished in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Of the 46 starters in the men’s race, 18 failed to finish.

But Boyce, who’s coached for Rob Heffernan, coped very well with the conditions to cover the 50k (31 miles) in 4hrs 7mins 46secs to finish sixth behind the race winner Yusuke Suzuki of Japan.

Earlier on Saturday, there was disappointment for another Donegal athlete – Mark English – as he failed to progress from the first-round heats of the men’s 800 metres.
