Mark English to run for Ireland at World Athletics Championships

Donegal middle-distance athlete Mark English will, after all, run for Ireland at this month’s World Athletics Championships in Doha.

The Letterkenny man appeared to have missed out on a place after failing to run the qualifying time for the men’s 800 metres.

But English announced on Twitter on Friday night that he had secured a place at the championships via the quota system.

The 26-year-old won a bronze medal at the European Indoor Athletics Championships in Glasgow back in March.

While his form had been mixed in the months since then, he retained his Irish national 800 metres title and won a Diamond League race in August.

English’s inclusion means Ireland will now have eight athletes competing at the World Championships in Doha, Qatar, which run from September 27th to October 6th.

Fellow Donegal man Brendan Boyce is also part of the Ireland team. He will compete in the men’s 50 kilometre walk.
